Traces: Relief is a participatory and performative action that takes place inside a haptic, herbal installation, designed for the purpose of rebuilding human connection with nature. Visitors will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in this structure and to create a “trace” – an ephemeral sign, visible proof of the time spent in physical contact with a plant- on their bodies. Two varieties of organic matter: skin and plant, affecting each other. The blood supply to the body echoing the forms of the horticultural veins, which when pressed against, produce a relief – a negative of form, which like a healing compress, brings relief. The symbolic ‘phytotherapy’, accessible to everyone, provides a chance for direct contact with 'nature' and its inscription into one's ‘body memory’, which is rare in our environment of culturally-shaped objects. Traces left on the skin of participants will be documented in-situ, their images will be added to the installation and subsequently to the library of traces created by Wiktoria Wojciechowska.
Since 2019 Wiktoria Wojciechowska has been working on the multilayered cycle “The Study of Traces”, using different media – photography, objects, sculpture and performance, the exhibition at Stroboskop marks the first public presentation of this project. The works emerge from an exploration of the temporality and permanence of touch, and its critical role in human experience at a time when the distance to nature is routinely increased by contemporary civilization. Hapticity is both the subject of the work and a means of communication with the viewer (toucher). Touch is not only the message but also the medium making it possible. The contemporary mediation of our experience through technology, with flat computer screens and smartphones, extends our perception in one way but narrows it in the other.
The exhibition will be held in two parts – from July 2nd to 10th, one can take part in creating traces, you are invited to lay in the grass and plants at Stroboskop and submit a photo to the library. From the 10th to the 23rd, the exhibition will present the documented process.

Herbal Bandage
This performative action will incorporate the plants installed at Stroboskop along with other plants, roots, and bark typically used in medicinal and dyeing processes. Led by the duo Tkanki Twórcze (Zosia Pieńkowska and Julia Kromolicka), we will create a collective, healing fabric that will be cut into symbolically healing 'bandages', which participants will be able to keep for continued nourishment.
Mobile Stone Lab
Wiktoria Wojciechowska and Mateusz Halawa Mobile Stone Lab is an event that connects Wiktoria Wojechowska’s series Mobile Stones, with a research project by Mateusz Halawa from SWPS University which is aimed at exploring the role of smartphones in the everyday experience. The mobile sculptures created by the artist – copies of smartphones made of gemstones – will form the foundation for discussing relations between ourselves and our media, as well as the emotions connected with scrolling, swiping, tapping, and using apps and sensors etc.. Halawa’s research will take the form of an open, performative-ethnography pop-up. Participants will have a chance to trade in their smartphones for one of the Mobile Stones for 20 minutes, and interact with these art objects - the prosthesis of a mobile device- triggering the intuitive gestures and memories inscribed in corporeal memory.Number of participants is limited. Discussion and exercises in cultivation: Kexin Hao, Wiktoria Wojciechowska

Kexin Hao and Wiktoria Wojciechowska will sit in conversation regarding two specific works, Traces: Relief and Hao's workFuture Dance of Nostalgia, which will center on physical connections between bodies and nature, the concept of body memory, which is also manifested in the repetitive and rhythmical gestures of manual plant cultivation. Hao will close the conversation with a performative exercise class where participants will be able to follow Hao and reproduce the movements of historic agricultural cultivation methods. The conversation and performative workout will be held online.
Wiktoria Wojciechowska (b. 1991) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. She lives and works between Paris and Lublin.Wiktoria Wojciechowska works across photography, film, collage and sculpture. Her current projects explore the open-ended idea of sculpture, creation of objects and ephemeral images. Her works refer to current events portraying society and individuals, with particular focus on observation and understanding of human lives and stories through the rules of society and history. Her projects are characterized by fragmentations and non-linearity and arise from shreds of conversations, images, rituals and various collected items.In 2015 she received the Oskar Barnack Leica Newcomer Award for her project Short Flashes – portraits of drenched cyclists captured on the streets of a Chinese metropolis. A photo book with the same title was published by Bemojake, London, and was nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize and the Author’s Book Awards, Festival Rencontres d’Arles.Between 2014 and 2016 Wojciechowska was working on Sparks – a multilayered portrait of the contemporary war in Ukraine. The project received several awards, including from the Festival Rencontres d’Arles 2018: Prix Madame Figaro and Public Choice Discovery Award. Sparks has been featured in numerous exhibitions, such as: Jimei X Arles festival, Xiamen, China; Krakow Photomonth, Poland; Museum of Photography in Riga, Latvia; Exhibition Bureau in Warsaw, Poland; Villa Perochon, Niort, France; La Filature, Mulhouse, France.Her current projects draw on performance and ritual, taking the viewer from the more passive physical sensation to a more active transcendent experience. Objects are made to be touched, allowing the visitors to perform their own healing rituals that might help them recover from an amnesia of nature.
Wiktoria Wojciechowska’s works are included in both public and private collections, i.a. Fondation Antoine de Galbert, Grenoble Museum; Festival Rencontres de la photographie, Arles; Fondation François Schneider, Wattwiller; Fondation les Treilles, Paris; Polish Modern Art Foundation, Warsaw.

Traces: Relief jest działaniem partycypacyjnym i performatywnym, zaaranżowanym wewnątrz roślinnej instalacji haptycznej stworzonej na potrzeby odbudowania połączenia człowieka z naturą. Odwiedzający/e będą mogli zagłębić się w tę strukturę i wytworzyć na własnym ciele „ślad” – efemeryczny znak, widzialny dowód czasu spędzonego w kontakcie fizycznym z rośliną. Dwie materie organiczne: skóra i roślina, oddziałują na siebie nawzajem; ukrwienie ciała i żyłki liści wytwarzają relief – negatyw formy, który jak leczniczy kompres przynosi ukojenie (ang. relief). Ta dostępna dla każdego, symboliczna „fitoterapia” daje możliwość przyjrzenia się rzadko występującemu w środowisku ukształtowanych przez kulturę przedmiotów, bezpośredniemu „zetknięciu” z przyrodą i zapisania go w “pamięci ciała”. Ślady powstałe na skórze uczestniczek/ów będą na bieżąco dokumentowane i umieszczane w przestrzeni wystawy oraz zostaną włączone do tworzonej przez Wiktorię Wojciechowską biblioteki śladów.
Wystawa w Stroboskopie, to pierwsza odsłona projektu The Study of Traces. Od 2019 roku Wiktoria Wojciechowska realizuje ten wielowątkowy cykl, wykorzystujący różne media – fotografię, obiekty, rzeźbę i performatywność. Kolejne serie prac, wpisujące się w nowy nurt poszukiwań artystki, powstają w wyniku eksploracji efemeryczności i trwałości dotyku, jego kluczowej roli w ludzkim doświadczeniu, skonfrontowanego z wymuszonym przez współczesną cywilizację oddaleniem od natury. Haptyczność jest tu zarówno tematem dzieła, jak i środkiem za pomocą którego komunikuje się ono z odbiorcą. Dotyk jest przedmiotem wypowiedzi i jednocześnie służy jej realizacji.
Wystawa dzieliła się będzie na dwie części. Od 2 do 10 lipca można będzie wziąć udział w wykonywaniu odcisków, położyć się wśród roślin i przekazać zdjęcie do bazy. Od 10 do 23 lipca dostępna będzie dokumentacja procesu.
